Use Summertime for Personal Growth

15 June

When the seasons change, we tend to think about how we've changed over the past few months and how that might affect what we do now or in the future. Would you like to feel like you have the drive to learn new things, do interesting things, and reach important goals? You can make these dreams come true this summer.

How will you get excited now that the weather is getting warmer?

Check out these ideas to help you plan the most exciting summer of your life:

1. Take some time for self-reflection.

Think about what you want and need right now in your life. Do you want to get closer to people? You might want to learn more about a certain subject, for example. Maybe you want more adventure in your life more than anything else. You should try these things out this summer.

For example, if you've been working a lot of overtime, you might decide that what you really need is to spend more time with your family and have more fun.

Think about what you're missing emotionally right now, and make a promise to yourself that you'll get it this summer.

2. Ask yourself, "What do I want to do the most?"

Write down the short-term and long-term goals you want to reach. Now is the time to really look inside yourself. Choose whether you want your list to be mostly about your work or your personal life.

If it's a personal list, you might write "Keep my cool when dealing with my teenagers" and "Exercise five times a week." You might also write "Save for a trip to Italy next year" and "Walk a section of the Appalachian Trail in September." Think of this list as your short-term list of things to do.

On your professional list, you might write "Research topic X" or "Complete a quarterly report on my achievements for the boss." You might also write "Resolve negative feelings about Jane Doe at work" or "Talk with my manager about taking on Project B." When making your professional list, keep in mind that your main goals for this summer are to spark deeper interests, find solutions to problems, and improve your work life.

3. Talk about summer plans now.

For most people, getting inspired means being around other people. Tell your partner or your friends that you're planning an exciting, motivating, and productive summer. Talk about your plans. Hear what they have to say.

If you have a close friend, they might want to join in and plan their own exciting summer with you. They might also want to join in on some of your plans.

Plan to spend time with people you look up to and learn from. After all, getting inspired is a spiritual journey that you take with the help of others.

4. Set up a trip for the summer.

When it comes to trips, nothing gets us excited like seeing new places, even if it's just for a long weekend. When you travel, you take your mind off of the everyday things you have to do. You are taken to a place where everything is new and different, both physically and spiritually.

You might make an outline for that book you've always wanted to write, or you might make a plan for your finances for the next 20 years. Your mind will be refreshed and your interest in new people, places, and things will grow when you take a vacation.

5. Choose three short-term goals to achieve by the end of the summer.

Create a thorough list on your notebook or post it note. You can put them on your fridge. Put the second copy on the mirror in your bathroom. Put them in your vehicle. Prepare yourself to do well.

If you take the time to think about what you want and how you plan to get it, this summer could be one of the most inspiring times of your life. Don't wait! Start making plans for your best summer ever right now.
