It can be hard to find time for self-care when we have so much to do. We hurry from one event to the next, using every free minute for work, family, and social obligations. Because modern life is so complicated, it's even more important to take care of our physical and mental health.
If you have trouble taking care of yourself, try one or more of the five suggestions below.
1. Include self-care in your regular routine
Make sure that you set aside time each week for self-care. If you put self-care into your routine, you will be more likely to do it because you will have set aside time for it. Self-care will become more of a habit and a regular part of your life the more you do it.
2. Do what you please
Self-care means different things to different people. Some people like to spend time outside, others like to hang out with friends, and still others like to kick back at home with a good book or movie. Choose something that makes you feel better and give it your all. Don't feel like you have to do what other people think is self-care. Not everyone enjoys long walks, for example.
3. Practice appreciation
Practicing gratitude every day is a good habit and a great way to spend time taking care of yourself. Spend some time each day or week to write down three things you're grateful for. Try to think of new things that happened in the last week instead of always bringing up the same old things. It might be hard at first, but the more you practice being thankful, the easier it will get. When you do thankfulness exercises often, your brain learns to be more grateful and optimistic about the things you have in your life instead of focusing on what you don't have or what's not going so well.
4. Be bold and attempt something different
Doing something different is a great way to break up the routine of everyday life. Your mental health will get better, and you'll learn new skills, both in how to do the activity and in how to deal with anxiety and be open to new opportunities. It is a great way to keep your mind and, depending on the activity, your body healthy.
5. Detox from social media
Social media can be a great way to stay in touch with people, but it can also make people angry because they compare themselves to others. If you feel overwhelmed or like you're in a rut, take a break from social media to become more present and re-energize in the real world.
